Monopoly | R.I.P. 'The Iron'

Scottie dog has a new nemesis in Monopoly after fans voted in an online contest to add a cat token to the property trading game, replacing the iron, toy maker Hasbro Inc. announced Wednesday.

The results were announced after the shoe, wheelbarrow and iron were neck and neck for elimination in the final hours of voting that sparked passionate efforts by fans to save their favorite tokens, and by businesses eager to capitalize on publicity surrounding pieces that represent their products.

The vote on Facebook closed just before midnight on Tuesday, marking the first time that fans have had a say on which of the eight tokens to add and which one to toss. The pieces identify the players and have changed quite a lot since Parker Brothers bought the game from its original designer in 1935.

Rhode Island-based Hasbro announced the new piece Wednesday morning. Other pieces that contested for a spot on Monopoly included a robot, diamond ring, helicopter and guitar. Fans from more than 120 countries voted.

I can't believe voters picked the cat over the robot.

Fear And Loathing | The Board Game

Example of dose cards
If you love the book or movie version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, then you've probably fantasized at least once about carrying a briefcase of drugs out to the desert and partying until you're arrested, dead, insane, or out of drugs, but let's face it -- only a handful of people could ever actually live the life of Hunter S. Thompson. For those who just want to pretend, there's no better option than Jonathan Baldwin's delightful Fear and Loathing Board Game that explores the chemistry, drug interactions, and effects of all the drugs in Thompson's famous briefcase.

Indie Gaming | The Stanley Parable

YouTube
In The Stanley Parable, you inhabit the body of Stanley, a man who, despite working a monotonous office job, is completely content with his life. One day, everybody in Stanley’s office disappears. Guided by a disembodied narrator — voiced impeccably by British actor Kevan Brighting — Stanley ventures off to find out why nobody is there.

It’s impossible to say much more without ruining the game’s brilliantly disjointed story, which takes around an hour to experience in its entirety. There are multiple choices, paths and endings, all of which will leave you with many questions and absolutely no answers. But The Stanley Parable will leave you thinking, and that’s what Wreden is aiming for. “The whole point of the game is that there is no answer,” Wreden said in a phone interview ... “The entirety of the game is realizing what the question is in the first place.”

The Stanley Parable breaks the fourth wall constantly, acknowledging that it is a videogame, limited by the medium’s constraints. It also presents hypothetical questions about the nature of choice, posits a debate about reality and contradicts its own rules constantly.

Test Your Reaction Time

Click here to test your reaction time

Test your reaction time with this quick game from BBC Science. Five sheep want to leave their flock and run for freedom. You click the tranquilizer button when you see a sheep moving. There's a three second penalty if you shoot a dart when no sheep are running. I'm a Bobbing Bobcat -- my average score was 0.2078 seconds. Not bad for someone of a "certain age."

Assembler 3

Detail

This game requires patience and a sure touch. The goal of each level is to get the green shapes to balance within the green outlines by moving the objects around to create supporting platforms or confining structures. The "Man In The Coffee Beans" Illusion

Doctors have concluded that, if you find the man in three seconds, then the right half of your brain is better developed than most people's.

If you find the man between three seconds and one minute, then the right half of your brain developed normally.

If you find the man between one minute and three minutes, then the right half of your brain is functioning slowly and you need to eat more protein.

If you have not found the man after three minutes, the right half of your
brain is a mess, and the only advice is to look for more of these types of exercises to make that part of your brain stronger.

The man is really there. Keep looking!
I couldn't find a source for this illusion. According to Truth or Fiction: We've not found the origin of the picture or any documentation that it is any reliable test of brain development. They call it an example of an "e-rumor."

It's still fun.

Thanks, tomB

Virtual Help For Soldiers With PTSD

Department of Defense
The Department of Defense launched a computer-based virtual world last week where soldiers can anonymously learn about the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and where to get help.

Creators of the Virtual PTSD Experience at the National Center for Telehealth and Technology, or T2, hope the program will cut down on stigma associated with the "signature wounds" of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan: PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury. Inside the computer-based program, servicemembers can create an avatar, a cartoon-version of themselves, to navigate through realistic scenarios in Second Life, a virtual-reality video game.

... Once logged onto the Virtual PTSD Experience, servicemembers will encounter a visitor's center on "Psychological Health Island," which will lead them through the three sections of the program: causes, symptoms, and next steps. Throughout the virtual experience, users can click on brochure links that will take them to informational websites, connect them with mental-health facilities to schedule an appointment or lead them through relaxation exercises.
