More than 300,000 people, including veterans and military casualties ranging from the American Civil War through to the actions in Afghanistan and Iraq, are interred in the cemetery.

Every year just prior to Memorial Day, small American flags are placed before the gravestones and niches of the servicemen and servicewomen buried at Arlington.
