Baconapocalypse
Britain's National Pig Association, "the voice of the British pig industry," warned recently that a global shortage of bacon and pork "is now unavoidable" because of shrinking herds.
The trade group reported Thursday that annual pig production for Europe's main pig producers fell across the board between 2011 and 2012, a trend that "is being mirrored around the world." The group tied the decline to increased feed costs, an effect of poor harvests for corn and soybeans.
Even though the pig association issued its dire prediction as part of a campaign to get British supermarkets to pay pig farmers more for their products, the possibility of a pork shortage received plenty of coverage in American news outlets.
But the projected decline isn't news to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In its monthly outlook report(PDF)from August, the department linked a reduction next year in the United States to this year's drought in the Midwest. The government expects corn and soybean meal prices to go up and hog producers to cut production in an attempt to control losses in their operating costs. Considering those factors, the USDA forecasted next year's pork production at 23 billion pounds, a decrease of about 1.3 percent from this year's estimated total. That breaks down to Americans consuming slightly more than 45 pounds of pork per capita in 2013, a reduction of more than 1 percent from this year's estimates.

Mmmmmm ... Coffee And Bacon
A pumpkin pie-spiced, bacon-flavored coffee called "How to Win a Guy With One Sip" will be recreated and sold at participating Seattle's Best Coffee locations across North America. Bacon and coffee -- two of my favorite things -- might be better using a caramel flavor instead of pumpkin pie spice, I think.

Boy Gets Hosed For Eating Too Much Bacon
A Philadelphia woman allegedly beat her grandson and sprayed his face with water from a garden hose because he ate a large amount of bacon for breakfast.NY Post | The Smoking Gun
Police were called to a suburban residence Tuesday after receiving reports of a domestic disturbance, The Smoking Gun reported Thursday. A neighbor told authorities that Marilee Ann Kolynych, 63, chased her nine-year-old grandson around the front yard before throwing him to the ground, "sitting on top of him, beating him on his legs and spraying water at very close range into [the boy's] face."
The boy told police his grandmother was angry that he ate too much bacon for breakfast and said that he had been "getting tortured all day," according to a police report. Kolynych faces charges of endangering the welfare of children, simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct. A preliminary hearing was set for next week.

Cooking In Sens | Scalloped Potatoes In Bacon Baskets

Cooking In Sens is written by an Texan named Rosemary who currently divides her time between Sens, France and upstate New York.
The photographs are gorgeous and the food looks incredibly yummy. Just look what she did with bacon! Does she cook like this every day? I would use these bacon cups to hold portions of macaroni and cheese, creamy scrambled eggs topped with melted cheese, savory rice and vegetables with a buttery panko crust, or even caramel- or maple-flavored ice cream.

International Bacon Day
International Bacon Day or Bacon Day is an unofficial observance, often celebrated on the Saturday before US Labor Day (the first Monday of September). Some cultures, however, celebrate on December 30th, while others celebrate the day on the first Saturday in January after the new year.Wikipedia
Bacon day celebrations typically include social gatherings during which participants create and consume dishes containing bacon, including bacon-themed breakfasts, lunches, dinners, desserts, and drinks. Bacon Day gatherings may also include the consumption of soy bacon or turkey bacon.
Bacon Day was conceived in 2004 by a group of CU Boulder (Colorado) graduate students.

So many of my favorite things in one delicious package: salted caramel, juicy bacon, and what appears to be chocolate cake. But caramel-y cake would be fine, too. The Hamilton Tavern is a great little neighborhood bar and restaurant in northeast Baltimore and I plan on trying one of these before the end of the holiday weekend.
Many thanks to Shrink Rap Roy for the heads-up.
Bacon Milkshake
In his book Thoroughly Modern Milkshakes, author Adam Ried dedicated an entire section to unconventional recipes, including the Maple-Bacon Shake. To try, just fry 2 slices of thinly cut bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon and let excess fat in the skillet cool. Then, along with 1 Tbsp of the cooled bacon fat, blend 2 Tbsp Grade B maple syrup, 6 Tbsp cold milk (whole or reduced-fat), 8 medium scoops of softened French vanilla ice cream and a pinch of salt. Garnish with bacon bits for more bacon flavor. Recipe yields 3½ cups.Get the recipes for more out-of-the-ordinary milkshake recipes at Woman's Day.

Bacon-Wrapped "Turtles"
Mmmmmmm ... bacon.
Create a Bacon Turtle by forming a ground beef patty, topping it with sharp cheddar cheese, and wrapping it in a delicious shell of woven bacon. Use cut-up hot dogs for the head, legs, and tail. Bake it in a hot oven (400 degrees) under a loose covering of foil for 20-30 minutes, until the bacon is cooked.
To make your Turtle extra tasty, you might brush on a little Rick's Rajin' BBQ Sauce near the end of the cooking time and run it under the broiler.
Yummy bacon-y goodness.
